Music has always been something Toronto-based singer-songwriter Ally Cribb instinctively understood, a gift inherited from her father, who is himself a musician and writer. She treats songwriting as a way of processing the experiences that shape her life and whenever something significant happens, she turns to her piano or guitar, working through confusion, frustration and wonder until feelings become words and music.
Her growing catalogue of well-received releases is marked by candid lyricism and increasingly brand of mature songwriting that belies her young age. Ally first introduced herself in 2019 with a cover of Radiohead’s “Creep,” transforming the song almost beyond recognition and revealing new dimensions of emotion and strength. In 2022, her debut EP, Unbroken, took her knack for emotional impact further, offering a seven-track outing which explored the suffocating grief she experienced after suddenly losing her mother during the profound isolation of the pandemic, alongside the quiet wisdom and perseverance that arose from that darkness.
The EP left a lasting impression, earning thousands of streams each week, dozens of media features and finalist positions in the 2022 and 2024 Song Academy Competition’s international category. Her songwriting has continued to receive recognition and in 2024, “California” won the grand prize in the Write Out Loud songwriting contest, leading to a new recording of the song by a Broadway singer and a live performance in New York. This year, three of Ally’s original songs also won awards at the Mid Atlantic Song Contest across two categories, while she received an InternContinental Music Award in the pop category.
